Deciphering the annoying, and often meaningless, language of cable-news reporters.

1. ‘‘Markets rallied on the heels of better-than-expected economic data.’’
Translation: A single data point has persuaded thousands of investors to buy stocks today.

2. ‘‘Can individual stocks rally amid the macro sell-off?’’
Translation: Is there any good news today?

3. ‘‘I want to drill down on the technicals.’’
Translation: Let’s talk about a chart.

4. ‘‘Can the S&P hold onto its gains this month?’’
Translation: Can you see into the future?
